Synchronization
across the gaps.

Networks aren’t always connected. Data should still be able to find its way.

IonoSync explores how independent nodes can retain and exchange data whenever they become reachable to one another, without a central server or a permanent internet connection.

Explore the idea
Store. Carry. Forward.01 / 02
An object travels from A to C through B In the first encounter, node A passes an object to node B. B retains it after disconnecting. In a later encounter, B passes the object to C. A and C do not need a direct connection. FIRST ENCOUNTER LATER ENCOUNTER B keeps the object while disconnected AB BC
Separate encounters. Retained data. No permanent connection.

The idea

Each encounter can move things forward.

A node may be offline for a long time, or only meet a few others. Information can still travel through a sequence of encounters.

  1. 01

    Store

Each node holds its own local data. Receiving an object creates an independent local copy.

  2. 02

    Carry

Retained data stays with the node while it is disconnected. Progress doesn’t depend on keeping a connection open.

  3. 03

    Forward

When another node becomes reachable, explicit messages determine what is missing and what can be exchanged.

With enough successful encounters, the current experiments converge on the same objects. Future designs may share or retain different subsets of information on different nodes.

Open design questions.

IonoSync is at an early experimental stage. The current Python implementation runs deterministic local simulations, including:

  • Independent nodes converging through explicit messages.
  • Limited encounters that transfer complete objects in each direction.
  • Recovery through fresh encounters after dropped or duplicate messages.
